Quick take

The AIF exam retake policy allows another attempt after a three-calendar-day waiting period, charges $75 per retake, and limits candidates to five lifetime exam attempts. Those five include the initial attempt. A retake follows the same examination requirements as the first sitting; passing still leaves the other designation requirements to complete.

After an unsuccessful AIF attempt, separate three decisions: whether your account permits another sitting, what you need to change in your preparation, and when your proctoring appointment should happen. The first is governed by Fi360 policy. The second needs evidence about your understanding of fiduciary process. The third must accommodate both.

What are the official AIF exam retake rules?

Fi360’s Examination Retake Policy sets a three-calendar-day wait after an unsuccessful attempt, a $75 purchase through your Fi360 account, and a maximum of five lifetime attempts. It also says the original examination requirements continue to apply to retakes.

  • Waiting period: count calendar days, rather than substituting business days. Use the eligibility information in your account or confirm with Fi360 before booking near the boundary.
  • Attempt count: five total attempts means the first sitting plus, at most, four subsequent attempts under the published limit.
  • Purchase: use your Fi360 account for the retake. Buying an independent study guide does not purchase an official exam attempt.

An account problem, a technical interruption, or uncertainty about a previously recorded sitting needs a direct answer from Fi360. Do not assume that paying again resets your history or that an interrupted session has automatically been removed. Ask support to confirm your recorded attempts and the correct next action before making another payment.

Can you see which AIF exam questions you missed?

Fi360 does not give candidates a copy of the examination, but general feedback is available on request. Its Examination FAQs direct candidates to Fi360Support@broadridge.com for that feedback. Ask what preparation areas the feedback can help you address; do not expect an item-by-item answer key.

Keep your recovery notes focused on your own learning needs: for example, “I confuse selecting a service provider with reviewing one already appointed,” or “I recognize an IPS but cannot explain which facts belong in it.” That produces a useful AIF study task without reconstructing protected test content. Fi360’s exam administration rules prohibit copying exam questions or answer choices.

A support request can identify the exam date, the account you used, and the administrative issue or general feedback you need. If there was a proctoring incident, describe the interruption and its timing rather than reproducing any question. Retain the response so your next appointment follows the instructions given for your case.

How do you arrange an AIF retake?

Purchase the retake through your Fi360 account and follow its scheduling instructions after confirming eligibility. For virtual, on-demand AIF exams, Fi360’s current proctor regulations require ProctorU. The waiting period expiring does not itself create an available appointment.

  • 1. Resolve the account record. Confirm whether another attempt is available, particularly if you have earlier sittings or an unresolved interruption.
  • 2. Request general feedback. Use it, where available, to choose which Prudent Practices concepts need further work.
  • 3. Purchase and schedule through the official path. Follow the instructions attached to your Fi360 training/account rather than arranging an unrelated remote proctor.
  • 4. Recheck the exam setup. Review current identification, equipment, room, and permitted-material instructions before the appointment.
  • 5. Confirm a preparation change. Be able to describe what you now understand about fiduciary decisions that you could not explain before the unsuccessful sitting.

The AIF exam-format and proctoring guide explains the test-day conditions in more detail. A retake is not an open-book review session, and an independent PDF or AI tutor belongs in preparation before the exam, not in the examination itself.

Worked example: calculate the retake cost without confusing it with tuition

Suppose a candidate has completed the original AIF sitting and is considering the financial effect of one or two further attempts. The calculation for the published retake charge is: number of retakes purchased × $75. One purchase is 1 × $75 = $75; two purchases are 2 × $75 = $150.

That example is a retake-fee calculation, not an all-inclusive AIF certification budget. It does not include original training, application dues, optional preparation resources, or any other charge that may apply to the candidate’s situation. Check the actual account checkout before treating the calculation as your final payable total.

Keep two separate entries in your own budget: “official retake purchase” and “optional preparation.” This prevents a common planning error: spending on more materials while forgetting that none of those purchases schedules the official sitting. If your employer reimburses certification costs, ask whether retakes and independent preparation fall into the same reimbursement category.

What should change before your next AIF attempt?

Change the specific fiduciary reasoning that caused difficulty, rather than using the waiting period as a countdown to another sitting. The official AIF blueprint divides assessed content into Organize, Formalize, Implement, and Monitor. Use those four categories to name the gap you will work on.

Build a short recovery worksheet with three entries per weak area: the AIF concept, an original practice situation, and the reason a tempting response is inadequate. “Monitor: review a provider after an organizational change; do not rely only on the latest return” is actionable. “Read more finance” is not precise enough to direct the next study session.

Original practice example: the watch-list decision

Imagine an investment policy statement says a manager change triggers a documented review. The manager changes, but the portfolio’s recent performance is strong. The committee proposes leaving the file untouched until performance deteriorates. This is an original educational example, not an official AIF exam question.

A weak answer is to retain the investment without review because the return looks favorable. Another weak answer is to remove it automatically because any manager change must mean the investment is unsuitable. Both skip the actual task: applying the stated review process to the new information.

A stronger response is to review the change against the policy’s criteria, evaluate the relevant evidence, document the decision, and assign any necessary follow-up. The resulting decision could be retention or replacement; the scenario does not provide enough information to select either outcome automatically.

The recovery note should therefore read: “I must distinguish a review trigger from an automatic removal rule.” Test the distinction again with a different fictional change, such as a service-provider ownership change. If you can explain why review is required without assuming a predetermined outcome, the practice has repaired a specific reasoning gap.

Use the AIF sample questions with explanations to practice this method. Fi360 says it does not offer official practice tests; independent questions should be treated as learning exercises, not as a preview of real exam items or a reliable prediction of your score.

Should you retake as soon as the waiting period ends?

Book an AIF retake when you can show a change in your understanding of the Prudent Practices and can meet the exam conditions. The minimum wait is an administrative boundary; it does not establish that your preparation is sufficient. An appointment should follow the recovery work, not substitute for it.

Before booking, explain one fresh scenario from each AIF domain without looking at a model answer. For Organize, identify authority and conflicts. For Formalize, connect objectives and constraints to policy. For Implement, explain the selection evidence. For Monitor, identify what deserves review and what must be recorded. This is an editorial readiness exercise, not an official passing standard.

If the same misconception appears repeatedly, use the AIF study plan to schedule targeted work. Do not infer that recognizing the wording of a familiar practice question means you can apply its principle to a new set of facts.

What happens after you pass the retake?

Passing satisfies the examination component, but you still need to complete the other AIF designation requirements. Fi360’s overall requirements say all requirements must be met within one year of passing; otherwise the examination requirement must be satisfied again by retaking and passing.

Use the complete AIF certification guide to check training, experience, ethics, application, and dues together. Keep the date of your passing result with those records so the application does not become an overlooked final step.

Build a focused AIF retake study file

For optional structured review, the AIF study guide PDF for retake preparation includes fiduciary-process explanations, a study plan, and 200 practice questions with explanations for a $19 one-time payment. It is an independent supplement, not qualifying Fi360 training or an official exam purchase. SimpuTech’s AIF AI tutor can help you discuss original practice scenarios and explain why a tempting answer misses the process; check policy questions against Fi360’s sources.
